Sarah's Review of In a Dark, Dark Wood by Ruth Ware

In a Dark, Dark Wood, by Ruth Ware, our main character, Nora, hasn't seen her high school best friend, Clare, for ten years. They haven't even spoken since the day Nora walked out of her high school, never to return.

Then, out of nowhere, Nora receives an invitation to Clare's hen do. Wanting to put her past behind her, and vowing to attend with a mutual friend who she has remained in touch with, Nora decides to go.

But right from the start, things seem off. Clare's maid of honour is high strung and almost seemingly obsessed with Clare, even copying the way she dresses. And the guest list is just as absurd.

If Nora was slightly uncomfortable before arriving, she becomes even more so after she meets Clare after those ten long years. Nora realizes that even though time has passed, some secrets can never stay buried.

And then to make matters even more confusing, Nora wakes up in a hospital bed, badly bruised and covered in blood, with only patchy memories of what happened the night before. But one thing she does know for sure is that someone is dead.

This is Ruth Ware's debut novel, however I read it after the Woman in Cabin 10. It was the main reason I picked it up.

In a Dark, Dark Wood was a very good read. It hooked me right from the beginning and the characters were so easy to understand. Also, the plot line was very sequential and everything fit in. At times I had "hunches" as to what was going to happen or what had happened in the past that Nora was hiding, and, even though those hunches were proven correct, the entirety of it was not overly predictable. You think one thought, but then the reasoning behind it or how it comes to be is not what you expected.

Ware's writing is so well laid out and she has the ability to entangle you into her story and the world she has created. The characters were easy to follow and each one had such a unique personality that it was nice to see how they all fit with and interacted with one another. Especially since none of them really knew each other before showing up for the hen (bachelorette) party. You could get a good sense of who they were, and as the story unfolded you saw the profoundness of their personalities take hold.

Ruth Ware's psychological thriller really takes you into the depths of what the human mind at it's darkest is capable of. And that you never really know what people go through or what they are thinking, no matter how well you may know them. You come under the realization that even one decision can have the ability to affect so much more than you could ever imagination. Even years down the road, one little lie has the ability to completely destroy a person's life.

In a Dark, Dark Wood is a page turning, murder mystery, that dives into the deep psyche of what one person could do to create their own reality and how intertwined our lives really are with those we are close to.

I highly recommend this novel, especially if you have read and enjoyed her other books. It is a quick, easy, dark read, that pulls you in right from the beginning. A page turning, murder mystery.

Excerpt

I heard noises: beeping, whispered voices. It was the clinical smell assaulting my nose that had me realise I wasn’t at home. I tried to open my eyes, but the light, such a bright light above me, burned my retinas. My body ached, my arm felt heavy as if weighed down.
I drifted back into sleep.
“Dani, can you hear me?”
“Dani, we need you to open your eyes, honey.”
Honey?
I felt a hand on my shoulder, it gently squeezed. Why couldn’t they leave me be? Did they not understand? The minute I opened my eyes, the minute I heard their words, I’d have to remember. I didn’t want to remember.
“Baby girl, it’s time to wake up now.” Not even my dad’s voice could chase the fear of waking up away.
The hand squeezed and eventually, fingertips pried one eyelid open. I moved my head away; it was an invasion. An assault on my desired numbness. I had no choice. I opened my eyes, squinting against the harsh lights above me and turned my head.
My dad sat on a chair beside me. He leant forwards, reached out, and smoothed the hair from my forehead. I winced at the sting as his fingers brushed over the stitches.
“Hey,” he said, gently.
A nurse stood beside him, busying herself with a clipboard and notes. She looked up and smiled softly at me. I didn’t return the smile.
I looked down at the arm that felt heavy and saw the white plaster cast, stretching from hand to elbow. Using my other hand, I placed it on my stomach. I knew.

Sarah's Review of The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware

It's been a very long time since I had the pleasure of reading a book that I absolutely did not want to put down, that is until I read The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware.
After the first quarter of the book, the intensity picked up and all I wanted to do was keep reading and reading. Every spare minute I had was spent with my nose in this book.
It is a page turning, psychological thriller, with so many spine-tingling twists and turns that you are left questioning everything until the final page.

In this book, we meet our main character, Lo Blacklock. She is a travel writer who just happens to score the job of a lifetime that could skyrocket her career. There is a new luxury cruise ship, the Aurora, embarking on its maiden voyage and Lo has been assigned. She couldn't wait for the quiet, calm waters and clear skies, with a few networking opportunities with guests. Anything to take her mind off of the crime that took place in her home just a few short days before.
As soon as she boards, she loves how elegant everything is, even the guests rooms are spacious with wide open doors looking out at the sea. However, the first night at sea, Lo is awakened by a splash out her window and what appears to be a body disappearing below the waters. Yet upon investigation, everyone on board is accounted for and no other person recalls seeing the woman Lo had met.
Lo knows she didn't imagine it, and is on the hunt to find out who the woman in cabin 10 was and what happened to her. Was she killed? And if so, does that mean that she is in danger now?

Ruth Ware has such a way with words that you are easily drawn into the world she has created. You feel as though you are on that maiden voyage of the Aurora with her, wandering through the claustrophobic under dwellings of the cruise ship, feeling as though your life is spinning out of control. Her main character, Lo, is so well laid out and it is easy to feel as though you know her personally and can easily empathize with what she is going through.

The plot is as churning as the waters in the seas and it takes you on a wild ride searching for the truth.

This book is the best book I have read in a very long time and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to read! There's suspense, mystery, and possibly murder, but you will have to read it to find out!

Sarah's Review of My (not so) Perfect Life by Sophie Kinsella

In Sophie Kinsella's newest book, My (not so) Perfect Life, we meet Katie Brenner, living in London, with the perfect life that she posts on Instagram for all to see....well maybe not quite perfect. Instead of a glamorous life she hopes for, she finds herself crammed into a tiny flat with flatmates. Katie's Instagram posts show a lie, only photos of what she wishes her life was like in an attempt to make her father proud. And she hopes that one day her life will match up to her posts. Katie's boss, Demeter, seems to have everything she wants. In Katie's eyes, Demeter has everything, she is smart, creative and has the most perfect home life with a perfect family.
Katie is working from the bottom up, she hopes, in a branding agency. Then, it seems that once Katie starts to finally be getting somewhere, her world comes crashing down. Demeter fires Katie, which causes her to move back home to Somerset with her father and step-mom. She helps them start up a new glamping business on the family farm and all is going great! Katie has even used her knowledge of branding to create the perfect advertising for the farm.
After she begins to feel like herself again, she finds out that Demeter's family has booked a week on the farm. Katie's is faced with a dilemma as whether or not to seek revenge on Demeter. Or to beg for her job back. But as she gets to know Demeter a little bit better she finds out some secrets that shatter her former misconceptions of reality. Maybe they have more in common than previously thought.

First off, I love the way Sophie Kinsella writes and this new character, Katie Brenner, is fantastic. Her character is very well-rounded and relatable. She taps into all of the insecurities that a lot of us have but are unwilling to share. Everyone wants to look perfect on paper, but how many of us actually live up to what we post? And even if ours posts are true, it's really only a half truth that we are sharing with the world. Nobody posts the bad stuff. Everyone just wants to share the good stuff. Therefore, if we don't truly know somebody we may think they have it all, when in reality we are only seeing one tiny snapshot of their lives. There are many layers that are left hidden.

The idea that Katie Brenner isn't solely looking for love, but in actuality is trying to define herself and her identity, while being judged online by today's society is refreshing. The lessons she learns and the person she becomes by the end of the book are good values. She learns that the only real person to be is herself and that person is valuable and unique. The best version of ourselves is the one who we are true to. The one who doesn't have to pretend to be something they are not.

Although there is a romance storyline in the book, it doesn't dominate the story. There are a lot of small plot lines that come together to make one amazing book. There were definitely some laughable moments, but there is a slightly more serious tone to this book than some of Kinsella's other stories.

I would highly recommend this book! Another job well done Sophie Kinsella! Love, love, love her writing!
