Sarah's Review of Lasting Impressions by John Schlarbaum

I recently had the privilege of meeting author John Schlarbaum at an event and picked up a couple of his books. Now I wish I had purchased more! I just finished reading the very intriguing, spellbinding novel, Lasting Impressions and it did not disappoint!

Lasting Impressions takes place in a small town, called Lasting. We find the townspeople enjoying the early days of summer with friends and family, until a newcomer arrives. This good looking, charismatic, young man, Dale Hawks, quickly gains the trust of everyone he comes across.
Jeremy Atkins is the mayor's overachieving son who picks up Dale Hawks hitchhiking. He has no idea about this young man's terrible past. He seems to have this otherworldly ability to adapt and blend in wherever he goes. Jeremy's girlfriend, Susan, is one of the first to find this out, as well as Jeremy's best friend and his secret admirer.
As each day passes and the warm weather gets hotter, it becomes abundantly clear that Dale Hawks is no ordinary human. His ability to mystically manipulate the townspeople is just part of his bigger plan, to bring about the destruction of the town.
There is just one catch, can Dale Hawks escape his own personal demons in order to bring about such a devastating end to the town?

Schlarbaum has the uncanny ability to draw you in from the very first page. A thrilling, suspenseful tale of what could happen when people are too trustworthy. It gets into your psyche and makes you question all of the strangers you come across. It makes the threats of stranger danger all too real and makes you wonder who you can trust.
From page one this story has your undivided attention and takes you on a spellbinding journey through so many twists and turns. Nothing predictable about this storyline. Schlarbaum keeps you turning page after page and guessing as to what is going to happen next.
All of the characters are strong and true to themselves. You feel like you know them, like they are your friends, or neighours or colleagues. Growing up in a small town, it's easy to understand how people can be so trusting and friendly, never expecting something, or someone, like Dale Hawks to show up and create so much devastation.
Personally, I enjoyed the mystical, paranormal spin on Hawks character.
I can't wait to read more of this phenomenal author's published works!

Excerpt

I slumped into my broken and grubby sofa, wincing at the soreness of my bare feet. I didn’t have the energy to clean them. Instead, I poured myself a glass of cheap wine and gulped it down. My hand shook so much it was hard to hold the glass to my lips. The wine burned its way down my throat, mixing with the bile that was churning in my stomach. I pulled my dirty feet up onto the sofa and curled up. Finally, the tears fell.

I hugged myself, trying to get some warmth into my bones. The trailer I lived in was freezing with just a small gas heater that gave off enough of a smell for me not to want to use it. I pulled a quilt around my shoulders and then cried harder. 

My grandmother had made that quilt; it was the only item I had that reminded me of her.

I missed her bitterly. I had since she’d died but more so then. She would have hugged me; she would have known what to do. I would never have found myself in the situation I was had she been around. I cried out her name, praying she could hear and guide me. Not that I thought I could sleep, but I closed my eyes, hoping that dawn would arrive quickly and I’d have a clearer mind.

A sweep of car headlights across the room disturbed me. I sat up, pulling the quilt tight around me and held my breath. The lights came to a stop outside my trailer. I quietly slipped from the sofa, and in a crouch, I crept to the window. I sat on the floor, my back to the door, knowing if someone looked in, they wouldn’t see me.

My blood froze in my veins when I heard my name being called, more so, when I recognized the voice. If he wanted to get in, one kick would have the front door fly off its brackets. I covered my mouth to stifle the sob when the door rattled.

“I know where you’ve been, whore,” he slurred, before laughing. “You won’t be going back there.”

“Please, go away,” I whispered, hoping for divine intervention. That came in the form of a dog.

Barking echoed around outside, becoming more frantic. I heard his heavy footsteps clomp down the wooden steps, away from the door, and then the headlights swept across the room again. I sat, straining my ears to listen for the engine of his car and breathed a sigh of relief when that sound became faint.

I knew at that point I couldn’t stay there. I had to leave. I scrambled to my feet and rushed into my bedroom. I gathered what few belongings I had, and crammed them into a battered backpack. The last thing I picked up was the quilt. 

I pulled on some socks and my sneakers, still aware of how dirty my feet were, and headed for the kitchenette. Hidden in a cupboard, in a small tin, were my meager earnings, well, the portion of earnings I was allowed to keep. In addition, there was my ‘gift’ of a hundred dollars. At the thought of that ‘gift’ and the person who gave it, tears welled in my eyes again. I would call the police, but I would have to do it anonymously. There was no way I could go forward and publicly report what I’d seen.

I was scared, I was trailer park trash, and I was a prostitute.

About The Author

L.J. Sealey was born and raised in a little Welsh town by the sea. It rains a lot, so she often has a great excuse to sit at her writing desk and while away the hours at her laptop.

She still lives in N.Wales and when she’s not travelling around the country working with her husband – who is a professional singer – or singing backup vocals herself, she likes to drive around the beautiful Welsh countryside. Some think it’s because she enjoys the scenery; others suspect she’s hunting dragons. L.J also likes to read and watch her favourite TV shows which normally includes plenty of CSI, The Vampire Diaries and endless amounts of sitcoms. EXCERPT 

I couldn’t breathe. I knew my mouth was open, I felt my heart beating but for some reason I couldn’t get my lungs to function and take in the breath of air I needed. Maybe it was a good thing. Had I taken in that lungful of air, I’m sure it would have been exhaled as a scream.

I looked around the bedroom. Blood splattered up the wall in an arc, in another world it could have been mistaken for a piece of abstract art. I didn’t want to look at him sitting naked. A hole, a bloody, dark red hole, had appeared in the center of his forehead.

I pulled the towel tight around my body. Only a half hour ago he’d been alive, sleeping. The shower water that dripped down my body chilled me to the core. I grabbed my clothes, which had been strewn around the room, and pulled them on as quickly as possible. I stumbled as one foot tangled in the leg of my jeans. I screeched as I reached out to stabilize myself and touched his leg.

“Oh, fuck,” I whispered, over and over.

Panic started to well up inside me. My hands shook as I buttoned up my shirt and looked around the room for my shoes. I spotted one but not the other. I grabbed my purse, the one shoe, and headed for the door. And then froze.

I rushed back into the room and grabbed the plastic bag from the bin; it contained evidence of our recent encounter. I picked up the towel I’d left lying on the floor and used it to cover my hand before I opened the bedroom door.

Moonlight streamed in through a small window in the hallway illuminating the stairs and giving me enough light to navigate down them. I crept down, pausing on treads that creaked under my weight and listened. I could hear my blood rushing past my ears to feed a brain that was firing off electrical impulses at a rate I wasn’t sure my body could keep up with. Muscles jerked as if preparing themselves for the flight option my body was desperate to take.

I should have called the police, I should have checked for signs of life. I should have done a lot of things other than the one I did—I opened the front door and ran.

Sarah's Review of Harry Potter and The Cursed Child Parts 1 and 2

Harry Potter and The Cursed Child is the Eighth Story in the Harry Potter series, and it takes place nineteen years later.

This book is actually a screen play so it isn't written in the normal fashion that we have come to know and love from J.K. Rowling of the Harry Potter series. But that doesn't spoil anything! It was different to see it written out that way, but once you get started you hardly even notice it's a play because the storyline and the movement of the characters dialogue is so engaging. It is a very easy read and as the acts are short it was very easy to read in increments or continuously.

In Harry Potter and The Cursed Child we see Harry as a grown up man. Harry is now working at the Ministry of Magic, is married to Ginny and together they have three school-aged children. Harry Potter never had it easy growing up and is still finding things difficult as an adult.

Harry is still struggling with his past as it doesn't want to stay in the past where it belongs. Harry's youngest son, Albus, is struggling with being a Potter and the legacy that entails, something he didn't want.

Without giving too much away, we find the past and present coming together in a terrifying way. Both father and son have to be honest and put their pride aside to work together. All while realizing that sometimes the darkness come from the most unexpected places.

It was very comforting to begin the story with familiar characters whom still possessed their original personalities. I was very glad that Harry, Ron, Hermione and Ginny had very much of the same characteristics just in a more grown up atmosphere. Even without the descriptions other than stage directions, you could still get a very good sense of their characters and their personalities through their spoken language.

Harry's youngest son, Albus, is whom the story centers upon. And we see him struggle with beginning school at Hogwarts and living up to his father's name. We also see a very unlikely friendship develop right from the beginning. Albus takes very quickly to a boy named Scorpius Malfoy. Yes, Draco Malfoy's son. And despite the relationship between Harry and Draco, the two boys quickly become best friends. And through their trials and series of unfortunate events, we find that they are able to teach their father's something about true friendship and ultimately bring Harry and Draco closer together. Draco's character has grown a lot since we last saw him.

I thoroughly enjoyed how raw the emotions were for all of the characters involved. We see how aging can mature us into something we never saw coming. We also bear witness to Harry's uncertainty as a parent just because of his childhood experience. But it also shows us how what happened to us in the past does not have to pre-determine our future. What happened in the past to Harry, not having a dad and being treated poorly, does not need to be repeated. Harry can shape his own children's lives for the good even though he didn't have anything to compare it to from his childhood. Harry shows us that we should learn from our past and strive for better, while continuously moving forward. The friendship between Albus and Scorpius shows what true friendship is and how strong of a bond it can hold.

The whole idea with the time turner was fantastic. It shows us how, even though we may feel insignificant at times, what we do can and will determine the future and the course of not only our lives, but the lives of those around us. We all play a part in this world and we all make an impact, whether big or small. We are all important in the roles we play in life and we have a significant effect on the lives of those around us, even if we may not feel that way. Remember, you are important.

If you are a huge Harry Potter fan like myself, and you have not yet read this, then I suggest you get your hands on a copy today! You will enjoy it! And even if the style isn't quite the same, at least you will know where the story has gone and what Harry Potter and the gang are up to now. Happy reading!
